DMEM is a liquid serum-free media and a variant of BME, or Basal Medium Eagle, modified to contain up to four times more vitamins and amino acids, and two to four times more glucose than EMEM; making it an ideal supplement for most cell culture media applications.

DMEM and EMEM are liquid serum-free media formulations and variations of Basal Medium Eagle (BME). Both mediums lack protein and contain the amino acids, salts, glucose and vitamins, required to provide a cell with energy and maintain cells in tissue culture, but the DMEM formulation is modified to contain up to four times more vitamins and amino acids, and two to four times more glucose than EMEM. This modified composition makes DMEM suitable for more specific cell types.

How Do You Store and Handle DMEM Media? Is It Safe?

The DMEM Solution is supplied in gamma irradiated, sterile PETG or PETE bottles. We recommend that the DMEM Solution be stored refrigerated at a temperature of 2oC to 8oC. When handling any biological product, it is a best practice to use industrial hygiene and aseptic handling techniques. There are no known hazards with DMEM. When stored properly, the DMEM can have a shelf life of up to 2 years.

DMEM is manufactured in an aseptic ISO13485 and GMP certified environment starting with a base of inorganic salts, amino acids and vitamins. However, it can be further amended with glucose, HEPES buffer, sodium pyruvate, L-Glutamine and Phenol Red. DMEM’s composition varies based on the chosen formulation for a specific application. The standard DMEM composition includes four times more vitamins and amino acids than the Basal Medium Eagle medium, from which it is derived. Custom DMEM composition varies and is available upon request from the reagent manufacturer, Biologos.
